Formation and early years
The Steve Miller Band was formed in 1966 in San Francisco, California, by guitarist and vocalist Steve Miller. Miller had previously been a member of the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band in Chicago, but he moved to San Francisco to be part of the city's burgeoning psychedelic rock scene.
The band's early years were marked by frequent lineup changes, but Miller eventually assembled a stable group that included keyboardist Jim Peterik, bassist Lonnie Turner, and drummer Gary Mallaber. The band's debut album, Children of the Future, was released in 1968 and was a critical and commercial success. It featured the psychedelic rock hits "Livin' in the USA" and "Space Cowboy."
Commercial success
The Steve Miller Band continued to release successful albums throughout the 1970s, including Sailor (1970), Fly Like an Eagle (1973), Book of Dreams (1977), and Greatest Hits 1974-78 (1978). These albums produced some of the band's most popular songs, such as "The Joker," "Rock'n Me," "Jungle Love," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Jet Airliner," and "Abracadabra." The band's music blended elements of blues, rock, and pop, and it was known for its infectious grooves and catchy melodies.
Later years and legacy
The Steve Miller Band continued to record and tour into the 1980s and 1990s, but they never achieved the same level of commercial success as they did in the 1970s. However, the band's music remained popular with classic rock fans, and they continued to perform to sold-out crowds around the world. In 2016, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
